DESCRIPTION: APW – Illinois, Bunn Special Grade 163 Elinvar, 23J 60 hour Elinvar, rare Type IIE marking, 16S, two-tone white and green gold-filled OF original Bunn Special Model 28 case, "Illinois Bunn Special 23 Jewel 60 hour" marked white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, mono-metallic balance with blued Elinvar hairspring, rayed pattern nickel damascene, s#5448285. An excellent example of the rarest variant of 23 jewel Elinvar Bunn Special, total production of this Type IIE is believed to be approximately 320 made per Mike Chamelin's Bunn Special book. CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, near mint cosmetic mvt condition overall, bright lustrous surfaces with few small fine and micro-fine scratches, few tiny specks of oxide on regulator assembly; flawless dial apart from a very faint shadow of Canadian market 13 to 24 hour numerals that were presumably overpainted at one time, these are visible mainly in certain lighting angles when the light reflects off the dial glaze but were likely cleaned away leaving only this faint trace remaining within the dial's surface glaze; fair hour and minute hands with areas of finish loss and some oxide, fine seconds-hand is a replacement of a bit lighter gauge than the original; case shows little wear, some short fine scratches and mild abrasions to rear, no dents or dings, very thin slivers of wear to brass to lower portion of band, small bits of wear to brass on pendant; brassy bow pivots semi-freely, replacement crown is a bit smaller than the original and shows light wear; good glass crystal.
